Artist
unknown. Santa Agueda, contemporary, Spain. Painted,
glazed terra cotta. Santa Agueda, patron saint of Benicasim,
Spain, the village adjacent to Playetas, site of our Spanish
house. A writer, Santa Agueda claimed her pen was dictated
by heavenly visions. Considered a heretic, she was punished
by removing her eyes. Blinded but unbowed, she continued to
write, directed by her heavenly muse. She is depicted here
with her eyes on a plate held in her right hand. In her left,
she holds a writing quill. Private collection.
